Badly Written, Badly Spoken / Re: Have, has or had?
« on: March 17, 2018, 09:42:02 PM »
Sentences 1 and 2 are both grammatically correct. In Sentence 1, the dreamer dreamed that his best friend died only recently, hence the use of the present perfect "has died." In Sentence 2, the dreamer dreamed that his bets friend died at some unspecified time in the long past or in the not so recent past, hence the use of the past perfect "had died."

Sentence 3 is grammatically incorrect because it uses the wrong plural form "have died" for the clearly singular "best friend." It should use the singular "has died" or "had died" instead, observing the conditions specified in Sentences 1 and 2.

Thanks very helpful I'm rally learnin from you and this site.

Use and Misuse / Short essay grammar check?
« on: May 23, 2017, 01:14:47 PM »
Hi guys

Any grammar mistakes in my essay below?

--------------------------------------------------------------

I live in Makati City, Philippines.

I do like living here because it's the business center of the Philipines.
Establishments such as school, drug store, hardware, bank, hospital, gym,
malls are very near and very accessible. Since it's the capital city I can
choose a lot of Internet Service Providers very easily. In addition,
transportation has many options such as tricycle, jeepney, bus, taxi
or train. Airports are also near by. One of the most secure cities in my
country.

I do not like it because it's air polluted, noise polluted, overpopulated
by people. Also, my house near the river and the river is polluted and is
very stinky in summer. The biggest disappointments are there are few
trees left so when summer comes it's very hot and it affects my productivity.
It's the prime city but it has squatters living nearby my house.
Another disadvantage is when war between China and my country will happen
it will be the primary target since it's the capital city.
Almost everywhere you turn around are cemented. One of the most
expensive places to live in my country. Almost everything is expensive here.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks in advance

Badly Written, Badly Spoken / Confusing question?
« on: May 22, 2017, 09:41:23 AM »
Hello someone asked me to make an essay.
Below is his requirement.

------------------------------------------
To prove that you qualify, please type up an essay of at between 150 and
200 words outlining what you do and what you do not like about your city
(to make sure that you pay attention to details, please mention your city
name once and only once within the essay).
------------------------------------------

I was confused by the phrase above "What you do and what you do not like"
For "What you do" is he referring to what I do as a person?
Or what I do like about the city?

confused.

Thanks in advance.

@Michael

Thank you very much, I will read your answer over and over again until I understood it.
Actually, I watched and heard it on WowWowWin on GMA7 I thought it was wrong.
So I needed to ask here just to confirm it, if it was wrong or not.

I wish there was the internet in my high school days.

Thank you Michael.
And to Mr. Joe thanks for establishing this forum, very helpful...

I'm really learning...

If I were her, I would not speak in English especially in National T.V. GMA 7.

Better to say it in Tagalog...

Badly Written, Badly Spoken / taught or teach?
« on: September 05, 2016, 08:00:13 AM »
This morning while watching 'Unang Hirit'

I heard a guest spoke this  below,

"We will taught you."

She was referring to the upcoming event.

Is this correct?

Or should it be "We will teach you."

By the way, if I'm not mistaken the guest was Coledesma she is well known and an Icon.

Thanks in advance.

Badly Written, Badly Spoken / Past Progressive Tense?
« on: September 02, 2016, 07:09:22 PM »
@Joe,

I got this sentence "Past Progressive Tense" below,

"I was running a marathon at this time last year."

I'm confused because it says "this time last year"?

Isn't it suppose to be like this below,
"I was running a marathon last year."

without the words 'this time' ?

Is this correct or incorrectly written?

By the way I got this from here,
http://www.talkenglish.com/grammar/progressive-and-perfect-tense.aspx

Thanks in advance.
