Who and whom
« on: November 08, 2019, 05:29:50 PM »
Hi sir Joe,

Just want to ask which of the below construction is correct:

The person who you speak with is ... or The person whom you want to speak with is...?

I am aware about the rules; however, I got confused with the structure above.

Thanks

My instinct tells me that I should use whom, but there's like another side of me which is in doubt.

Mike, the answers to your tough questions about the "who"/"whom" usage conundrum are rather complicated and I think a quickie, off-the-cuff explanation just can't give justice to the matter. I'm at work at my definitive reply right now and I've already scheduled it for my November 21 column in The Manila Times, which of course will be posted here in the Forum on that same day. I hope you'll find it worth the wait.
