This section features discussions on education, learning and teaching, and language with particular focus on English. The primary subjects to be taken up here are notable advocacies and contrary viewpoints in these disciplines and their allied fields. Our primary aim is to clarify matters and issues of importance to language and learning, provide intelligent and useful instruction, promote rational and critical thinking, and enhance the individual’s overall capacity for discernment.

In the US, are too many students going to college?

Should everyone go to college? This is a question that’s being hotly debated now in the United States, and perhaps it’s a question that should also be seriously looked into in the Philippines sometime soon. At least in the US, in the context of rising student debt and the growing number of college dropouts, there is wide disagreement on the following issues related to college studies:

Which students are most likely to succeed in college?
What kind of college they should attend?
Does the individual or society benefit more from postsecondary education?
Is college is worth the high cost and likely long-term debt?

In its November 2009 issue, The Chronicle Review in the US presents the views it gathered from nine American higher-education experts who responded to these four questions. These views should probably be food for thought for Filipinos as well, particularly for Philippine educators charting the future of teaching and learning in our country.
