First, for Shakespeare lovers: Don’t miss the “Shakespeare Turns Pinoy” lecture-show this Thursday, October 21, at 7:30 p.m., that will be being conducted by the British Alumni Association in celebration of UK-RP Week 2010. Dr. Ricardo Abad, professor and theater arts director of the Ateneo de Manila University, will give a lecture on nine plays of Shakespeare relocated to Philippine settings. The venue will be the British School Theater on 36th Street, University Park, Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, Metro Manila.

Accompanying Dr. Abad’s talk will be scenes from selected Pinoy Shakespeare productions to be performed by Ateneo alumni and students in theater. The plays are Julius Caesar, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, Twelfth Night, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Richard III.

And second, for sustainable construction advocates who can write: Holcim Philippines, the cement company that forms part of the Holcim global network, is inviting Filipino participants to join the 2010 Holcim Journalism Awards for Sustainable Construction. The competition is being conducted in the media category and student category and offers a total of PhP420,000 in cash prizes.

The Grand Award winner in the media category will receive a cash prize of PhP100,000, a trophy, and a round-trip plane ticket and accommodation for a three-day stay in Singapore to attend the regional ceremonies for the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction. The student whose essay is adjudged most outstanding will receive a cash prize of PhP50,000 and a round-trip plane ticket and accommodations for a three-day stay in Singapore to attend the same regional ceremonies.

The deadline for entries in the student category is this coming November 12, 2010.

The deadline for entries in the media category is May 31, 2011.
