I – “THE PAUSE THAT REFRESHES”

My personal retrospective on Philippine Senator Benigno Aquino Jr.’s manner of speaking in English when I flew by happenstance with him and a leading Defense official aboard the former’s private twin-engine aircraft from Vigan to Manila on April 26, 1972. As a newspaper reporter I followed their every move and took note of every word they said.

II – “A GRAMMAR CONVERSATION ON PARENTHETICAL USAGE”

An e-mail conversation I had in September 2020 with a friend, the late Palanca Awards Hall of Famer Ed Maranan, on the proper punctuation mark to use for parentheticals. He was consulting me about this line from one of his children’s stories: “Those words seemed to have an effect on the boy, whose interest in his little birthday gift—and yes, pride in his grandpa—were growing by the minute.”

An e-mail conversation I had in September 2010 with my friend Alfred “Krip” Yuson, the Palanca Awards Hall of Famer and Philippine Star columnist, on his observation that particularly among young writers, no one uses “under” and “below” anymore; they strongly prefer “beneath” instead.
