You Asked Me This Question / Correct usage of apostrophe to show possession
« on: February 07, 2013, 06:58:26 PM »
Sir,

Is it correct that when a word ends in "s" and has 2 syllables, 's  should be added. Like: Lucas's dog.

and

If the word ends in "s" with only one syllable, only apostrophe should be added. Like Kris' son.

Thank you. Pls enlighten me with the rule.

You Asked Me This Question / usage of is or are in some form
« on: August 24, 2012, 04:34:04 AM »
Hi Mr. J. Carillo

Please elaborate the correct usage of is or are in some form of sentence.

Three gallons of ice cream is or are not enough for our party.

My reasoning is the ice cream could just be in only one container.

Thanks

Hi Mr. J. Carillo

I'm a little bit mixed up about the use of is or are in this sentence;

Three gallons of ice cream is/are not enough for the party.

My reasoning is the ice cream could be in only one container.

Thanks a lot.

You Asked Me This Question / will hell break lose!
« on: May 29, 2012, 06:01:52 AM »
This was posted in a blog site;

"will hell break lose" seems to me it is not right.

It should be "will hell break loose" isn't it?

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks

I came up with a blogger post using the idiomatic expression;

She posted "will hell break lose" is this correct?

Shouldn't be "will hell break loose"?

Thanks

You Asked Me This Question / how many person or persons in best?
« on: February 10, 2012, 06:20:40 AM »
Hi Joe,

Please enlighten me and my wife which is correct;

My wife who teaches English subject in third and fourth year was fuming mad when she arrived home last night.

Her problem was that she posted three names in her classroom bulletin board three names as "best in English"

One of her co-teacher corrected that using the word best to describe a persons can only mean one as the best in English not  two or three.

I explained to her that unless the three persons have identical grades then she can put the three names as best in English. If not, there must be only one that occupy the best list.

Thank you again.

The Philippines will always remain a feudalistic country, run by feudal landlords, with feudalistic minds. Whatever others think of it, it is not a democratic country. This country is a 21st century misnomer.It's hypocrisy that's embedded in the culture, hence, that feudalistic tendency to be on guard in this manner. As it is, when one member of a family runs, as in the case of the Binays, the Tingas, the Belmontes, the Aquinos, the Ampatuans and a long, long list of et al--the citizens simply allow themselves to be caught in this never-ending friendly crossfire of pretentious idealism and cunning persuasion. It is the meek that drag the country down to frivolous superstition and division, not innate intelligence. Being meek is more powerful than being independent--and these feudalistic families certainly know how to take the micky of out these citizens. No amount of good education would suffice if to convince them is muche easier than bribery itself. The Filipino psyche is unique that it tends to sway with more regularity than those banana leaves tended by poor farmers earning a measly sum of P9.50/per day....and what can we do about it  when these feudal landlords don't give a damn anyway?Materialism draws in more than good opportunism and when that happens on a big scale, we know that corruption isn't far away. ::) :P :-[ ;D

I don't think you know what you're talking about feudalistic society.

Site Announcements / Re: Some words of caution to those traveling abroad
« on: September 28, 2011, 09:11:20 AM »
When traveling abroad, make sure to have a photocopy of all pages of your passport and plane ticket, I mean all pages If possible  and keep it with you personally. If checking in a hotel, ask for personal safety deposit box and store all your important personal documents in the safety deposit box. Most 5star hotels have deposit boxes for free.

It is always safer to use travelers check when traveling abroad. Keep the bank receipt and take note of the travelers check serial nos.
