Title: Past Progressive Tense?
Post by: solid9 on September 02, 2016, 07:09:22 PM
@Joe,

I got this sentence "Past Progressive Tense" below,

"I was running a marathon at this time last year."

I'm confused because it says "this time last year"?

Isn't it suppose to be like this below,
"I was running a marathon last year."

without the words 'this time' ?

Is this correct or incorrectly written?

By the way I got this from here,
http://www.talkenglish.com/grammar/progressive-and-perfect-tense.aspx

Thanks in advance.

It's correctly written. What the writer meant by the expression "at this time last year" is that when he ran last year it was at the same time when the utterance was made. Let's say last year the writer/speaker ran from 7 a.m. till 8 a.m. Today, looking at his/her watch the writer saw that it's 7 a.m. He recalled what he did last year and related it to a friend saying, " I ran at this time last year. "

Hope this helps you.
