Going beyond its own Journalism college program,
The Manila Times reached out to students from other schools by holding its first-ever Campus Journalism Congress on November 8, 2019 at The Hilton Hotel in Pasay City.
Dubbed “Presspectrum” on the theme “Diverse perspective in the pursuit of journalism,” the congress was participated in by students, faculty members, and staff of 25 schools in various parts of the Philippines.

Manila Times president and chief executive officer, keynoted the event and welcomed the participants. “Having always had this advocacy of being a teaching newspaper, we’ve gone beyond our own journalism school and decided to reach out to students from other institutions,” he said. The Manila Times School of Journalism, established in 2002, expanded into a college in 2007 and now offers AB Journalism and other programs.
The congress’ key resource persons who shared their expertise and experience in investigative journalism, business reporting, and broadcasting were Manila-based Thomson Reuters journalist Manuel Mogato, 2018 Pulitzer Prize co-winner with two other Reuters reporters for international reporting; Jim Gomez, Manila chief correspondent of The Associated Press; Camille Bersola, news anchor for Teledifusao de Macau English news; Raffy Santos, senior reporter of ABS-CBN News Channel; and business reporter Ben Arnold de Vera of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Resource persons from
The Manila Times were Catherine Valente, a graduate of the
Times own journalism school who is now the paper’s Malacañang reporter;
Times sports columnist Eddie Alinea; and
Times cartoonist Steven Pabalinas.
