Was I right for deleting the word new in this sentence: Nearly half of the new jobs created were in the agriculture sector?

No, you were not. When you knocked off the adjective "new" in the noun phrase "new jobs created," you altered its meaning seriously. The term "new jobs" means "jobs that did not previously exist" in that sector, as opposed to "previously existing jobs" that were only filled during a particular period.
