Insularity
« on: July 02, 2010, 05:55:41 PM »
Insularity breeds more corrupt practices, more misunderstanding, more ignorance, above all, more polarisation. Internationalism is the way forward in the 21st century, without losing the Filipino identity. (sadly, I will continue this new topic at a later date) ;)

In today's harsh realities, i.e., the world, Filipinos should or must stop feeling too emotional about not being too close to the Americans. Maturity now dictates that the US is indeed the last bastion to pour out sentimental feelings when there are up-and-coming countries that the Philippines can be equally friendly with, without compromising national security. The collective desire in that country to keep telling themselves that they owe their lives to the US--or its coffers--is truly a sign of immaturity and insularity--two vital things that would need shaking off. Time to pick the bones out of the so-called US-Philippine Friendship and make way for something more acceptable to local eyes, notwithstanding the friendship to be just that: cordial, respectful but not starry-eyed. Now, now, is that so hard to do? ;)

Cozying up with the Americans is fine. But in doing so, it alters the fundamentals of the basic friendship between the two peoples. The Americans are a very insular people, something that many Filipinos don't seem to realise. They are one of the least traveled people around, unlike the Europeans and to a lesser extent, the Filipinos. Precisely why their thinking and approach are so distinct from others. It is the very insularity of the American administration and previous administrations that, to this day, Israel remains a troublesome, dangerous state. For the Philippines to step up further their foreign policies, they should now find ways and means to improve its relationship with China, Russia, India, and other wealthier South American countries. When will the turning point of making the US just another friend? Well, they should stop this nonsense of thinking that the Philippines is very  important to them because it isn't. Britain also felt that way but they are now  re-thinking their own relationship with America. Insularity is not the answer to secure the country's  borders. It is, to put it simply,  bad psychology.  ;) ;D
