In a new book, The Genius in All of Us, David Shenk contends that genius is within the reach of every individual, and argues that IQ tests and the widespread acceptance of so-called “innate” abilities have fostered much misdirected public policy especially in education. But does this also mean that wisdom, which is presumably the handmaiden of genius, is similarly within everybody’s reach? Not so, says Stephen S. Hall in another new book, Wisdom: From Philosophy to Neuroscience. “Put simply, we all know it when we see it; we just don’t see it very often,” he says.
