Use and Misuse / Re: Using "nor" alone
« on: April 26, 2013, 03:47:05 PM »
In your example for the use of “neither…nor,” “Neither you nor me carried the burden,” I think the “me” should be “I” because it is a doer of the action. Am I right?

Students’ Sounding Board / Literature in English Class?
« on: March 26, 2010, 07:17:24 PM »
Just something off the top of my head...

This may sound a bit strange. But, why is literature tackled in English class? For example, in our class, we studied on Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" which is African literature.

Is there such a thing called "Literature Class"? If there is, why are pieces of literature that are not distinctively English taken up in English class?

Any help would be appreciated.  :)

Students’ Sounding Board / Antecedents
« on: February 18, 2010, 10:26:51 PM »
Just a quick question.

In grammar, what are antecedents exactly? When and where are they used?

In English class, we discussed about pronoun-antecedent agreement. I knew exactly what to do, but I couldn't quite get my head around on what an antecedent is exactly.

Any help would be appreciated.  :)

You Asked Me This Question / True Finite Verbs?
« on: October 18, 2009, 10:43:35 AM »
At my school a few days ago, my English teacher mentioned something about a"true finite verb"

She pointed out the parts of the sentence “To leave now is out of the question.”. She mentioned briefly that “to leave” is not a "true finite verb".

I know that “leave” is a verb, but why is it not a “true finite verb”? What does that mean?

Use and Misuse / Subject-Verb Agreement?
« on: August 26, 2009, 11:00:09 PM »
Are there specific rules on subject-verb agreement?

If so, what is the general rule in it?

What are the rules when there are compound subjects connected by an "and" or an "or"?

They're just really quick questions; I'd appreciate any quick help to it.  :)

Use and Misuse / Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers
« on: July 19, 2009, 11:50:34 PM »
How exactly can these two be identified?

I know that a misplaced modifier is a modifier that modifies the wrong word. I also know that dangling modifiers are modifiers that don't logically fit in the sentence.

But when there is a given sentence, how can one identify if the modifier is misplaced or dangling?

For example, in the sentence "At the age of 5, uncle taught him how to play baseball." The modifier is "at the age of 5", but is it dangling or misplaced?

Any help would be appreciated.  :)

Is "so that" considered as one whole conjunction or separate words entirely?

For instance, if I had the sentence "The boy crossed the road so that he could get to the other side.", would "so that" be a conjunction or just a part of one main clause entirely?

Any help would be appreciated~  :)
