Thoughts about Filipino as the Philippine national language
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:50:33 PM »
This August being National Language Month in the Philippines, the Forum has put together a potpourri of opinions about Filipino as the country’s official language. In the Commentaries page, we have provided links to four recent columns about the subject that came out recently in the major Metro Manila dailies: “The language of presidents” by Fred de la Rosa in The Manila Times about Malacañang’s communication initiatives using Filipino; “Words and Meanings” by Rina Jimenez-David in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on how the use of language indicates one’s attitudes and values; “From Quezon to Noynoy” in the Times op-ed page about how Filipino is “burnishing the national identity and gluing national cohesion”; and “Filipino, Filipinas” by Michael Tan in the Inquirer on the issue of the orthography or spelling of Filipino.
