U.S.A.: Under its roof sleep the enemies?Opinion by Maximo Tumbali, Forum ContributorThese days America cannot seem to spare itself from the trouble of thinking that from all sides, it has enemies creeping in ready to attack. There are signs cropping up on the scene that corroborate this suspicion, the latest of which is that breaking news about Chinese spying that targets America.
At present America is waging a trade war against China. If Chinese spying on America be proven true this feud between the two powerful countries will further intensify. Immediately, directly, and worst affected are the Chinese Americans. Non-Chinese Americans will very likely become suspicious of all Chinese people residing in American soil.
The Chinese won't take this lightly nor in stride. Among themselves, they will start harboring fear that those who are not of their race or color will automatically turn against them. Their being American citizens cannot guarantee their safety, the reason being that if you are Chinese (although a naturalized American citizen), you're being labeled or seen as a spy and, hence, an enemy of the state.
This issue on Chinese spying targeting America, if blown out of proportion and is found to have really been taking place, will induce the United States to have sleepless nights thinking about how it can contain, stem, or thwart this treacherous act. America cannot imagine itself having people under its roof turning out to be its enemies. In the eyes of the non-Chinese Americans, this act is abominable and unacceptable. This is treason of the worst kind.
In a situation like this, America cannot help cringing in fear knowing that the very enemies it tries to fight are themselves part of its whole citizenry. America will be like a boat with all of its citizens of various colors and cultures sailing on turbulent waters, tossing and rocking, trying helplessly to keep its balance.
One can also picture America as one boiling pot where its people, owing to internal threat or sense of insecurity fueled by confusion, will be forced to break out, sowing terror, chaos, and disorder, precipitating the eventual collapse or downfall of America. Worst, America will be like a time bomb about to explode at any given time.
Can America enjoy a peaceful sleep if under its roof sleep the enemies? It cannot, for sure. The worst thing it can suffer is paranoia or insomnia, or both.
