Hello Mr. Carillo! It's been quite a while since I logged in to take part in the forum. I'm confused of these terms.Transformational generative grammar,comparative-historical grammar, traditional, and structural grammar. What are there differences?

Thank you so much!

You Asked Me This Question / 'None'
« on: March 25, 2010, 02:53:25 PM »
There's this example from an English book using the word none in a sentence. It says there: "All the women are fat, none of them are thin".There's no explanation from the book and I'm also confused myself. To say none means nothing but why "none of them are".Shouldn't it be none of them is?..Thank you so much for your solutiion to my problem! ;)

Your Thoughts Exactly / Re: English in the World of Medical Transcription
« on: February 23, 2010, 10:32:11 PM »
Great observation! The English curriculum should be improved in accordance with the needs of the time. English in the classroom is really different when you're already working.I taught in the classroom too but not as an English teacher (because that's not my major) and my English skills really improved when I became an ESL instructor. It's not that I didn't like the academe but I searched for something new so I ended up with this type of work. English educators, specifically those who are afraid of technology and new ideas, should  exactly know what will be valuable to their students when they're done with studies.
However, I should also be of service to my fellow Filipinos that's why I'm planning to teach in the classroom again, now armed with skills I myself didn't learn in the classroom. ;)

When it comes to the country’s situation, the arguments become never ending. I wasn’t so surprised when I was reading James Fallows’s article because I believe he really immersed himself and made a thorough study to observe the Philippines.I was a college student when I went to Smokey Mountain the first time for a community work wherein I and my classmates had to accomplish a report. The smell was really awful even inside the school’s car,and when we’re within the community, we pretended we didn’t smell anything (we had to)..I haven’t been there ever since and now that I’m a teacher and has my own family, I know it’s still a mountain full of garbage, and lives of people hasn’t changed at all. Maybe they don’t really want to. And the government’s budget’ for the poor is being enjoyed by some politicians. As to who they are and how they did, only God can tell. Of course, as people, we should also accept change ourselves not only rely on government’s help.

Corruption in the government should be eradicated, but how? This is so easy to say but we do not even know if a politician is sincere in saying he’s not corrupt. As ordinary citizens, let’s do our share of helping ourselves first and then our fellow Filipinos. Being honest starts from us, don’t bribe any government officer so as not to influence others.Let’s help our poor countrymen if we can, don’t wait for some politicians to do so. Whoever may be our leader, let’s not expect him to change the Philippines the way we want.

Yes, I think there hasn’t been a big change in the country after so many years except for those who are rich getting richer and poor still getting poorer. However, through education, we can improve our own economic well being. Sometimes we have to consider what foreigners say about us, but not to the point that they degrade our well being as Filipinos. I love my country, even if it may seem “ugly” to foreigners because they really don’t know how beautiful it is. ;)

Badly Written, Badly Spoken / Re: Why fight the wrong enemy?
« on: December 09, 2009, 04:05:42 PM »
I wonder why the writer of this ad used CAUTION to save our economy. Maybe he doesn’t care about the meaning of this word or even its usage. If used as a noun it means alertness and prudence in a hazardous situation or a warning against danger or evil, while as a verb it means to give warning to (dictionary.com). Using the first meaning, maybe he wants people (those who can read the sign) to be alert about the economic situation. However, it’s contradicting the slogan “SAVE THE ECONOMY’ which in itself has a deeper meaning. If he used this as a pun, well, I think it’s not also correct.

For the second part FIGHT THE ECONOMY, maybe he means people have to struggle for economic survival. The word economy is a general term that can’t be used easily for a slogan like that.Or maybe he used a figure of speech? It’s hard to think of the correct word that will remake this sentence specially if the writer means another thing.Literally speaking, it’s not easy to fight the economy, and how will I fight an idea? This is not a good sentence but the second one is just fine.

My Media English Watch / Re: SEASON'S GREETINGS!
« on: December 09, 2009, 03:25:54 PM »
Hello tonybau!
Let me also be the first to reply to your greeting. We may not know each other here but I guess that's the spirit;sharing good ideas, expressing emotions and being concern .I do agree with this statement no recession is ever going to spoil the season's merriment because the real essence of Christmas is love and peace for each and everyone!
Have a joyous holiday!  :)

Trying to be abreast of the latest posts in this forum, I chanced upon this topic and kept thinking of my own conviction.I have been using the expression “I just arrived home” to correct student’s answer of this particular question:”Where are you now?” The expected response could be: “I’m at home”, “I’m in the office”, “I’m at the park”,…etc or that one “I just arrived home”. It really depends on what he wants to say where he exactly is..
Our trainer is a native of South Carolina so I asked his opinion about the usage of the said expression. He said there’s nothing wrong with it and that he uses it to tell the condition of his arrival in the house and that it has nothing to do with the word “home” having a special meaning.
In this sentence “I just arrived home”, the usage is correct. But maybe to use it together with other words (like Joe’s examples),the usage seems to be improper.
According to him, he’d rather use that expression than “I just came home” although it still denotes another meaning.
This reply is almost late but I guess learning shouldn't end on the last post. :o

Lounge / It's worth the effort!
« on: December 02, 2009, 07:22:37 PM »
Three weeks ago, there was a TOEIC exam here in the office. Before that, I searched for different TOEIC sites on the web for a self review. I got bored reading all those questions and some words made my nose bleeding (arrgh!).Until I came across Joe Carrillo’s Practice Tests and found out the questions were challenging (wow!). Honestly, of course, I don’t want to cheat myself, I took the TOEIC practice tests and got perfect scores.I’m not bragging, I just couldn’t believe it. I only looked for the answers after I’m done.

For the result of my TOEIC test in the office, well, not perfect, but almost! The checker said I got seven mistakes.Again, I’m not bragging, just so happy because I discovered this site unexpectedly. ;)

I do agree that the greeting lacks proper exclamation and question marks to give its deeper meaning. But then I guess that an observer of  this picture would immediately be captured by the liveliness of the flowers and cat's eyes.
