Use and Misuse / Backshifting rule on relative clause
« on: October 21, 2022, 09:46:06 AM »
Hi Forum members,

May I ask if the backshifting rule on tenses also applies to verb in the relative clause. Kindly look, please, the sample sentence below. Thank you.

"The program is available to members who are delinquent in their payments before the March 10, 2021 cut-off date."

Reported: He said the program was available to members who are/were delinquent in their payments before the March 10, 2021 cut-off date.

Hi Everyone,

I just want to ask if the last parts of the passage below which I have read in a book is grammatically correct and why:

"Students receiving presurvey of their knowledge thought they did worse on this quiz than did participants who confronted the more comforting presurvey."

Should it not be " than those participants who confronted the more comforting presurvey."

Thank you in advance.

Badly Written, Badly Spoken / Replying to a thank you email
« on: February 14, 2019, 08:41:38 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I always receive a thank you email and always responded with the usual "you're welcome".
I believe it is impolite if I don't respond even if it's just "Thanks" or "Thanks, benedict".
Am I correct? or I just overthink.

Thank you.

Use and Misuse / Confusion with "As much"
« on: February 07, 2019, 11:53:54 AM »
Hi Everybody,

I read in a book the following sentence and had a hard time making sense of it.
"Half again as much teritory has been brought into subjection since Gaugamela as in all the prior campaigns"
Could anyone help me on this, please.

Many thanks!

Benedict
