Cozying up with the Americans is fine. But in doing so, it alters the fundamentals of the basic friendship between the two peoples. The Americans are a very insular people, something that many Filipinos don't seem to realise. They are one of the least traveled people around, unlike the Europeans and to a lesser extent, the Filipinos. Precisely why their thinking and approach are so distinct from others. It is the very insularity of the American administration and previous administrations that, to this day, Israel remains a troublesome, dangerous state. For the Philippines to step up further their foreign policies, they should now find ways and means to improve its relationship with China, Russia, India, and other wealthier South American countries. When will the turning point of making the US just another friend? Well, they should stop this nonsense of thinking that the Philippines is very important to them because it isn't. Britain also felt that way but they are now re-thinking their own relationship with America. Insularity is not the answer to secure the country's borders. It is, to put it simply, bad psychology.
