THE WRITING CENTER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL

One of my most informative and interesting finds on the web is the site of the Writing Center of the University of Carolina at Chapel Hill in the United States. It has a superb and highly comprehensive collection of resources for students and teachers on writing essays, term papers, theses, dissertations, speeches, and various other requirements in college and graduate school.

The site has a very engaging introductory essay, “Situating Student Writers,” that clearly lays out the basic concepts of academic writing and candidly describes the attitudes, behaviors, and experiences of students during the writing process for their college papers.

Then, for writing the paper, it offers handouts on developing the argument, identifying the target audience, brainstorming, paragraphing, and even on dealing with anxiety during the writing phase.

For citation, style, and sentence level concerns, it gives guidelines on giving appropriate credits to resources, avoiding plagiarism, editing and proofreading, gender-sensitive language, and style.

For specific writing assignments, it gives helpful descriptions of what are expected in abstracts, book reviews, business letters, dissertations, and application essays.

And for writing for specific fields, it offers some guidelines for writing papers in such general subjects as anthropology, communication studies, history, political science, the sciences, and various other disciplines.

These resources should prove very useful to students who want to do an excellent job in doing their college writing requirements, and to teachers who need a better appreciation of the challenges that face the students when writing their papers.

So whether you are a student or teacher, I strongly suggest you check out the site now and bookmark it in your computers.
