Are English and Language Teachers the same?
« on: May 29, 2009, 09:46:51 AM »
Hello, Sir Joe,

Are English and Language Teachers the same? Are the expressions, "dine in" and "take out" correct usage?

We are very excited to get a copy of your latest book entitled, "Give Your English the Winning Edge."

Thanks indeed, Sir Joe.

No, English and language teachers are not necessarily the same. An English teacher teaches the English language in particular, but a language teacher—commonly known as Language Arts teacher in some countries—teaches a language indigenous to a particular locality or cultural setting; in the Visayas, for instance, a Language Arts teacher could be teaching Cebuano or Haligaynon. In countries where English is the native or official language, of course, the English-language teacher often becomes the language teacher.

Yes, both “dine in” and “take out” have been socially accepted usage for many years now particularly in fast-food societies like the United States and the Philippines. However, my Merriam-Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary still doesn’t recognize both for formal usage, though; interestingly, it records that “dine out” has been acceptable usage since 1736. It also recognizes the unhyphenated single-word “takeout,” which, of course, is prepared food packaged to be consumed away from the place of sale, or the store itself that sells it.

I’m glad that you’d like to get a copy of Give Your English the Winning Edge. It will be out soon within the month. Watch for it!
