The perils of strongly polarizing evolution and religion
« on: August 15, 2009, 12:06:42 AM »
The two coauthors of a new book, Unscientific America: How Scientific Illiteracy Threatens Our Future, suggest in an article in the August 11, 2009 issue of the Los Angeles Times that it might be counterproductive for the so-called New Atheists to be attacking the view of some people that science and religious faith are actually compatible.

Chris Mooney and Sheril Kirshenbaum, in their article entitled “Must science declare a holy war on religion?”, argue that while its valuable for evolution to be articulated by staunch advocates like Richard Dawkins, the standing of science may in fact be undermined by this unending polarization between evolution and religion. They believe that that there might be wisdom in the initiative of some moderate organizations of making frequent alliances with religious believers who also support the teaching of evolution, in the hope of forging a broad coalition that could beat back the advances of religious fundamentalists who want to weaken textbooks or science standards.
