Title: Prepositions
Post by: Lyndon Tidlos Gabato on October 18, 2016, 03:48:42 PM
Hello,

Please observe the sentence below.

"We are at the hospital to visit a friend who is in the hospital."

What is the difference between "at the hospital" and "in the hospital"?

Not much really except in the English standard or habitual usage by the speaker or writer. Both "at the hospital" and "in the hospital" are grammatically correct, even if some pedants insist that "in" or "at" is the strictly correct usage. Check Lesson #8 – "Specific Rules for Preposition Usage" (http://josecarilloforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=139.0) and the related postings on prepositional phrases and prepositional idioms in the Forum's "Getting to Know English" discussion boards.
